As a young child, Mabel Hoerner traveled to Cripple Creek, Colorado in the summers to visit her father, an engineer working on a project. She always remembered picking wild strawberries along the hills outside of town near the creek. Standing among the aspen trees at the top of the hill, young Mabel felt dwarfed and awed by the rugged peaks of the majestic Rocky Mountains all around her.
