Big Slice Apple Sauce The Family Chef: Product Review
December 21, 2011
Last year, I met the nice folks at Grandma Hoerner's at The Fancy Food show. I loved their products like the preserves and the dark fudge sauce. I must have made a comment about how much it was like the low sugar preserves I buy from Trader Joes. Guess what? That's their product!
Last year, I posted a recipe for Apricot Dijon Chicken which I use for both my family and in cooking classes. I love that their products are natural and mostly organic. For the preserves, they reduce the sugar rather than use a substitute sugar. As a mom, I love that the preserves are not as sugary.
We recently tried the Big Slice Applesauce and served it with gluten-free latkes. This applesauce has no added sugar; it's sweetened from fruit juice instead. This makes it just sweet enough. Both of my kids loved it. I wanted to share some other ideas for how you could use it:
-Serve with a pork or turkey roast as a side dish. -Serve with potato pancakes, aka, latkes. -Add to yogurt with a little cinnamon for a snack. -Make a "duck sauce" (see recipe below) to serve with eggrolls or wontons. -Eat it out of the jar with a spoon (ok, maybe just when it's almost finished). -Serve warm over vanilla ice cream (skip the pie crust).
I hope you will give it a try. I don't think they sell this at Trader Joes; maybe they should. You can also order it on-line. Enjoy the recipe!
Amy's Duck Sauce
1 cup of unsweetened or low sugar applesauce ¼ teaspoon each ground garlic and ginger 2 teaspoons low sodium soy sauce ½ teaspoons sesame oil 1 teaspoon rice wine vinegar 2 Tablespoons sugar (use only 1 Tablespoon if applesauce is sweetened) 2-3 Tablespoons apricot or peach preserves (another great Grandma Hoerner's product!)
Place all ingredients in a food processor or blender and pulse for 20-30 seconds or until pureed. Place in the fridge for 30 minutes if possible. Serve with eggrolls, wontons, or grilled chicken or shrimp.

Recently Grandma Hoerner's got in touch with me to do a product review. I will start by saying that a lot of companies get in touch with me, however, I typically decline because I do not wish to represent their products due to the ingredient list.
Grandma Hoerner's is an exception. I have already done a review on their fabulous Pumpkin Butter and I use their reduced sugar jelly for my daughter. I was so excited to try this Big Slice Apple Sauce. The website states:
*USA Apples *All Natural *No Preservatives *No Sugar Added
The main thing I look for in apple sauce is for no sugar added but frankly, when you taste a lot of them, you can tell there is no sugar added; bland, tasteless, sort of...boiled. This is an exception. When I took a bite it tasted like pie filling!
I can't wait to make a pie with the next jar. I immediately added it to my grocery list to buy some more and make an open faced pie or crumble (recipe to be posted). And guess how many calories in half cup. Only 50 with 3 grams of fiber!
I’m a huge fan of the texture of the big, tender slices as opposed to the pureed applesauce version. And being the cinnamon lover that I am, that hint of cinnamon is what does it for me. The whole jar is already gone! I highly suggest getting your hands on some of this yummy goodness and trying some for yourself.

The chunkiest applesauce you'll find! The Nibble: Product Review
April 30, 2011 at 7:49 am
Grandma Hoerner’s Big Slice is the chunkiest you’ll find. Photo by River Soma | THE NIBBLE.Well, “chunky” may not be the most accurate word.
Grandma Hoerner’s makes a specialty applesauce called Big Slice, because the applesauce is mostly large slices of apples, just like in a pie—but stewed to softness instead of baked.
Grandma Hoerner was raised on an apple orchard in Kansas, and began making applesauce in the late 1880s. Her grandson, Duane McCoy, began bottling and selling Grandma’s recipe in 1986. And we really like it.
The applesauce is made from all-natural, slow cooked apples. No sugar is added; the products are sweetened with fruit juice. In addition to the original All Natural Big Slice, Grandma Hoerner’s makes several varieties with added fruits or spices:
• Apricot Big Slice • Candy Apple Big Slice • Cinnamon Big Slice • Raspberry Big Slice • Raspberry Jalapeno Big Slice • Strawberry Big Slice
We tried the original Big Slice applesauce, plus the Apricot and Strawberry versions. Compared to the glamour of the compound flavors, the original flavor was the plain sister. Go for the Cinnamon instead.
We loved Apricot and Strawberry, and look forward to trying the rest of the line. And at $5.50 for a 26-ounce jar, they’re a good value.
The products are available at GrandmaHoerners.com. They can be enjoyed as a side or dessert. Packaged in attractive Mason jars, they make inexpensive small gifts and stocking stuffers.
Thanks, Grandma Hoerner.

Food Find! Grandma Hoerner's All Natural Pumpkin Butter
Monday came to a close after my daughter's uneventful ENT checkup. I got home early and took her and my two Labradors for a nice long walk.
I started this morning off right with coffee in my new mug along with a little oatmeal and Pumpkin Butter. (Recipe in next post).
I'll admit...I bought a jar of Grandma Hoerner's All Natural Pumpkin Butter last fall and have just broken into it and I can't believe I waited for so long. It brought memories of my favorite season, fall, rushing back. Pumpkins and turkeys and cranberries, oh my!
For all you weight watchers out there, two tablespoons is 1 point. Per Tablespoon Cals: 25 Fat: 0 Fiber: 0 Here are some of the ideas I found on chow hound for "What to do with Pumpkin Butter" and a few of my own thrown in. Mix in to oatmeal. Mix 2 Tbsp with 2 Tbsp of your favorite nut butter and spread on an apple or whatever. Mix it with cream cheese for a pumpkin cream cheese spread. Use in place of oil in recipes. Mix with Fage or other yogurt. Toast brioche with Roasted peppers, grilled eggplant, pumpkin butter feta, and optional avocado, greens. Fettuccine tossed with pumpkin butter and cream, pine nuts, sundried tomato, spinach. Baked into a sheet of phyllo with 1 apple, shredded.

Alma, Ks.—Grandma Hoerner's is celebrating its 25th year of business this year. Created in 1986 in Encino, California Duane McCoy moved Grandma Hoerner's Foods to the Kansas Flint Hills in 1993. In its Alma, Kansas manufacturing plant Grandma Hoerner's produces over 60 natural and organic products.
Recalling the wonderful flavor from his youth, Duane McCoy worked hard to replicate Grandma Hoerner's apple sauce recipe. Using Fuji and Pink Lady apples Duane was able to keep the firm texture and sweet-tart flavor he remembered. From this classic recipe eight more flavors were developed that would create a company.
As demand grew customers began asking for other products with the same high quality. Now with over 60 products: from sauces, jams and preserves, pie fillings, toppings, chutneys, and relishes to premium dry mixes, gourmet coffee, and candles, everything is still made in small batches with the finest ingredients that won him his first clients. For 25 years Grandma Hoerner's Foods has stood for the old fashioned pure products that Grandma Hoerner would have made herself.
